The choir at St. Mary’s has been involved in leading worship over many years and is a versatile and creative group of people who enjoy singing together and exploring different styles of music. We meet most weeks on either a Tuesday from 8.00 - 10.00pm or a Friday from 7.30 – 9.30pm to prepare music for special services such as Lessons and Carols at Christmas and a devotional service at Easter, as well as hymns and anthems for Sunday services. We have a time for prayer, singing practice and an informal time of fellowship, usually accompanied by cups of tea and even cake!
There are also opportunities to join in events and services across the diocese, with neighbouring parishes and occasionally with the diocesan choir singing at St. Paul’s cathedral. The musical styles are quite varied and we have sung traditional choral evensongs, contemporary Christian songs, and music from around the world to highlight themes such as mission or climate change.
Our music director is Jozef Janik, who is a qualified organist and experienced choir-master. He is also a concert pianist with an interest in various styles from classical to jazz - so choir practice can include an impromptu improvisation!
